My '63 had the e-brake removed by the previous owner. From what I have read from the experts here, this is probably because he coverted to a 305/TH350 from a 70s Camaro and that the AT interferes with the brake assembly.

I'd prefer to have an e-brake. Are there afterarket options for this, or can I get a stock setup new or used and re-route it so it works?

Thanks in advance! smile

you can use the 66-72 setup, but all cables must be swapped to the later style. works great, I did it on my 64,,brian

The state of CA says you got to have one. Did it originally have the e-brake on the rear of the manual tranny? Do you still have the original rear axle an Eaton? Does it have the e-cabled?

Thanks for the replies. smile

I'll have to check the rear axle, Larry. I just got a shop manual in the mail today (got it off eBay for $10 grin ) so I'll check there too to see if it's transmission or axle.

I like the idea of the later model setup. I'll look into that too.

I've got 63 C20 myself and will have the same problem you have now. Most of the C20s and above with manual trans, have a drum brake on the back of the trans for the e-brake. When replacing the trans with an auto or ??? you lose the drum brake. The problem isn't the under dash e-brake, that's basically the same from 60(?) to 72, it's the e-brake cables off the rear axle. The Eaton does come with an e-brake setup, it's just hard to find. I had another 63 C20 with an Eaton and a TH400 that had the e-brake lever under the dash. Maybe some one else has a different solution.

On the 63-5 manual trans trucks the e-brake works off the x-member for the manual tranny which is lost when adding an automatic. So you 3/4 ton fellas got trouble on both ends. The 67-72 setup is independent of crossmembers. Most Eatons I have seen have spots where you could drill the backing plates & add a cable or you could rob the plates off a later Eaton,, the 67-72 auto trucks are good for updates. brian

Why not just cut your brake line and install a Micro Brake? It shuts off the brake pressure with an electric operated valve and will lock either axel or both.

A Mico Lock brake system is not legal for use as an emergency brake, but thanks for the suggestion.

I have a 66 3/4 t. gmc and installed a 283 w/a 400 TH. The E-brake still works properly. You can change to one like it like 64 fleetside say's.

I'm older than my truck but it's smarter than me! 66 GMC 3/4 ton fleetside 283, turbo 400.
