For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 14 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 14 | I'm ready to license a 1950 chevy truck in Texas, someone has told me that truck farm tags for that year plate are not elgible. Any help is appriecated. I already have a 69 Chevelle with YOM plates. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | YOM plates are allowed, I don't know about "farm" plates. I spoke to the DMV a month ago about YOM plates (I have a pair of 51 plates) and was told I would be able to use them if no one else had the same numbers on current plates. I don't know why truck plates would matter.

The only ones who can tell you if plates are registrable is someone at the tag office with access to the database. And you may have to talk to the supervisor. The gal at the window in Parker County didn't know squat about them when I registered my 'burb. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | Settle down Cletis, it's time to put on your glasses and begin to read. I didn't say I was told my plates would be acceptable. I said I was told they would be if they were unique.

Quite often the local Tax assessors office has to call TXDOT in Austin. And if they talk to 2 different people, they may get 2 different answers. The trick is to deal with the one who has the answers I like. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 55 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 55 | I have 1952 Farm Truck plates and had absolutely no trouble registering with them in Texas. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | Well there you go! enuf said...

I didn't say I was told my plates would be acceptable. I said I was told they would be if they were unique. I wasn't referring to anything you said. I was referring to geb's statement, "...someone has told me that truck farm tags for that year plate are not elgible." | | | | | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 565 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 565 | I also have farm truck plates on my 57. The girl at the tax office initially said I couldn't use them without applying for the farm truck exemption, but the other more knowledgable employee there said it wasn't an issue as the registration for YOM plates was different. So it should't be an issue.

They were able to get over the "farm truck" designation without too much problem. For them (again, in Parker county, but I'm at the east end ) it was most important that they are the correct color for the year of manufacture. She verified color correctness, then took a photocopy of both plates to show that they were in good usable condition, and handed me back the plates with the tag. One last thing: the woman at the second window tried giving "advice" to the woman I was working with. She had heartburn over the farm truck designation. I pulled out the argument "If I had '58 dealer tags, I could run them without being a dealer, right? It is the same thing with farm tags and me not using this for farm purposes." She agreed and let it ride.
