I have a 46 chevy 1/2 tod with a 235 ci engine. It has a manual 3 speed original transmission. I would like to replace the original trans with a manual 4 speed S10 transmission. I understand that it can be done but the closed driveshaft has to be replaced with an open. Any tips? Has anyone done this conversion?

It has been done many times but acually we use the S-10 5 speed. There would be little advantage to the 4 speed because the main idea is to get o-drive. There has been many threads on this subject on this website. Do a search & look at the tech tips. After you study it a little & have questions post them & you will get plenty of help.

Thanks. By any chance are you the person Ben Macdonald contacted about this conversion? If so I am the owner of the truck that Ben will be converting to the S10 5 speed.

Thanks..My guy told me that he contacted someone on Stovebolt and had the exact same suggestion that you had. I'm glad there is more than one person with the same idea.

Thanks

I just put a 92 t-5 behind my 235 by myself following the advice in the tech tips section. I have been driving it for about 3 weeks now , Its great ! I used a clutch disk from a 83 84 firebird 2.8 liter , ( this was the cheapest I could find and its bigger than the s-10 ) the bell housing throwout bearing clutchfork is origional . I took my driveshaft to the shop to have it shortened and balanced $125.00 I am not a mechanic so I was a little intimidated , but it worked out fine . Good luck!
