( I think)Is there an ADAPTER PLATE TO MATCH A 400 AUTOMATIC TO THIS MOTOR..AND IF SO WHAT GEAR RATIO WOULD WORD BEST FOR EVERY DAY USE..TOWN AND HWY DRIVING..IF THE PLATE IS MADE WHO AND APPROX. HOW MUCH... | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | There are two sources of adapter plates that I am aware of. Langdon's Stovebolt makes one and Buffalo Enterprises makes one. Langdon is probably linked from the vendor list here and Buffalo can be found on the Inliners.org site. I'd expect to spend $400-ish.
The TH400 is much heavier than a TH350 and consumes more power in operation. I think its overkill for a mid 50s six unless you are running a blower and nitrous. Maybe even then.
You probably want gears somewhere in the 3's. Engine mods, tire size, highway speed and loaded weight would all affect what is 'best' in your case.

If you were using a SBC motor, something more like 3.07:1 would be better. I would try mating a 700r4 and using 3.9:1 gears if I were putting an auto. Actually scratch that... I would never put an auto in a 1940 truck. :P | | |
