The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop rear end rebuild?

Am in the midst of a frame up resto of a 49 1/2 ton Chevy. My dilemma is whether or not to tear down the rear end to rebuild. The truck was running OK when I started and I'm wondering if this is necessary. As a minimum what should be done to the rear end? Would like to hear thoughts of others who have been there Thanks

If I were on your shoes I would do something about the original 4:11 ratio. Whether you go the Patrick's route or change to a more modern set-up, you will be glad you did something about getting your speed up and your engine rpm's down..

I drive my truck quite a bit. When I plan my route I try to avoid the highway as much as possible. There are times though, when you need to get out there and get moving. I have the Patrick's 3:55's and never go above 60. For me, that was the best money I spent on the truck. It makes it a lot more practical to take on a trip and enjoy..

I would at least put in new bearings, seals and lube. If it don't have floating hubs I would check the end play on the axles as well. Easier to do now than a few years down the road.
