For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 83 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 83 | somewhere else.I purchased and installed a new radiator and thought that would solve the leak problem.I checked it yesterday and put in about a gallon and a half of anti freeze and water. Is the old truck leaking out the water pump ? I don't see any leaks when running or sitting? Where else could it be leaking? Any ideas or suggestions? Located in Missouri where the big snow storm is and temperature is 25 degrees. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 90 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 90 | It could be your water pump,is there any residue around the bearing or weep hole? It could also be escaping as steam, your temp sending unit, head gasket, heater core, any hose connection. How's the oil look? foamy? Antifreeze never really dries so look very closely for the sticky residue it leaves behind

I bet it is the water pump.Shouldn't involve too much to fix. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | A gallon and a half is a lot of fluid to lose. A small leak can leave some residue as evidence. In my case it leaves a white colored residue. If you have a miss at idle, you might want to look at your plugs. My # 3 plug used to look different than the rest and that is where the crack in the head was. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 83 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 83 | Chevy garage called and they think it is a wrong radiator cap. 48 chevy had a 4 lb cap on it and they replaced it with a 7 lb cap. Garage thinks that is the problem, not leaking now. They want to keep it and drive it on the road in a few days once it quits snowing, if it ever quits snowing. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | That doesn't make a whole lot of sense but good luck to them. If a 7 lb cap causes it to use antifreeze, you have a leak somewhere. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | I'd suggest it's likely that the higher than design pressure combined with overfilling could well have resulted in overflow ... that's why they put an overflow on the rad after all .... make sure you don't overfill, keep it at least an inch below the fill neck when warm, even 2 or 3", and see what happens - and always check water level when the rad is warm, not cold
