Hi, I need some help from you guys out there. I just bought a 235 with a New Process four speed tranny. I have a 51 1/2 ton with orig. 216 and three on the tree. The 235 came from a 61 1/2 ton. It has a hydralic clutch, I think? The trans is for an open shaft. Can I use this set up in my truck? I know from reading the stovebolt page that I will prob. need a nova or compatable rear. The clutch is the thing I have no idea about. Do I need a whole new bell housing clutch assembly? Also the trans is a A833 New Process. Does any one know if they are any good? Thanks alot.

It could be done but I would just use the 235 engine with all the presant parts. That early NP trans. had a weird syncro. system. They would break often. The replacement was much better & they were easy to work on. It seems you could use your preasant bell housing & clutch but you would still have to change rear ends & drive shaft.

I thank you for the reply. I want to get rid of the three speed so I can shift on the floor. The three speed is getting pretty shot anyhow. If I were to use my present bell housing and clutch, could I throw a T-5 behind it? I've read alot of posts about useing that tranny. I was quoted a price of 165 at a local bone yard for a 73 complete Nova rear. Does that sound like a fair price? Thankyou again.

The t-5 is a good way to go. I,m getting ready to put one in my 55-2. There is info in the tech. tips & a lot of past post on the changover. I don,t know a lot about rear end swaps. The price is about right from a salvage lot but might be cheaper if you find an individual parting one out or a pull it yourself lot. Most of them go to the pulverizer.

I have a t5 on order as well-picking it up Saturday. As long as you are not doing very heavy towing it is supposed to be a good tranny.

There are several posts on the rear end swap whichever trans you go with (I chose the t-5 and would reccomend it). If you stick with the NP you've got there are two types of hydraulic clutch set ups. Both use a master cylinder. One has a push cylinder hooked up to an arm that attaches to the throw out bearing. The other uses a hydraulic throw out bearing. Either way, you can make them work with your truck if you can figure out how to mount a master cylinder and attach it to the stock pedal.

When I did my rear end swap I decided to upgrade to disc brakes in the front and wanted the front and rear bolt patterns to match. I measured the old axel from mount surface to mount surface and then compared the back spacing on the new rims to come up with the width for the new axel. After I got the axel I chose home (paid $100), I had to go through the brakes completely and spent around $200 for drums, cylinders, hardware, shoes, e-brake cables.... If I had to do it again, I would buy the rear disc upgrade kit from Speedway for the same price OR_____ I would have looked for a rear axel with disc brakes.

Whatever you do, grab everything you can that goes with the axel, especially the sway bar and e-brake cables. They'll come in handy!

As far as front discbrake upgrades, they are very easy- All you need is the brackets and you can get the 70-77 camaro calipers and rotors from autozone. Just replaced my calipers and they were $13/each reman w/LLT warranty. Rotors are $40 each.

So I should prob. scrap the A833 trans. and the 61 bell housing with the hydraulic clutch and look for a t-5. I think I would have to change the fly wheel and clutch on my original bell housing assembly, from what I've read. tlorber, where did you order a t-5 from?

The NP transmission is actually pretty desirable. I wouldn't swap it for a T-5, it has almost ideal gears for a 235, and the shifter is in the right spot. I keep hoping I'll run into a good one around here but haven't yet.

I'm relatively sure you can use the original bell housing for your truck with this transmission and it will fit just fine. I'm using a '50 bellhousing on my 261, it fits fine with the original clutch setup. The 261 is a 62 and it had a hydraulic bellhousing on it when I got it.

I think Tony P was using the A833 for a while.

4onthefloor, thanks for the info. I am going to try the NP on my original bell housing. I looked up some info on this tranny and found that it has ratios of 1st. 3.09 2nd. 1.67 3rd.1.0 and 4th..73 I don't know if that is good or not but it has to be a little better than the three speed in there now. I will still have to convert to an open drive. I,ll probably go with that nova rear at the bone yard. Thanks for all the info.

that is a great ratio combo. I am looking at a np 5 speed transmission. the ratios are almost identicle. the difference is that 1st gear in the 5 speed is much lower at 5.6. the .73 over drive is ideal and will work very well with a 3.55 to 4.11 rear end. with 4.11 gears the overdrive works to give you an effective rear ratio of 3.00. Put simply another way... if you were tacking 4000 rpms at 55 mph you would now be tacking under 3000. the last numbers were made up for comparrison.

No one has mentioned (maybe you already know) but if you go to the T-5 your bell housing will work but you will have to change the clutch disc. The T-5's have a 23 spline input shaft and the older units have a 10 spline input shaft. The bell housing and your original clutch linkage will work (it does on my '50, anyway). I also used the rear end out of a '78 Blazer (full size) and it was almost the perfect width, still has the 6 bolt lug pattern and worked very well. You would just need to weld spring perches on the rear end housing (pay attention to pinion angle). I ended up using a Tremec 5speed and 4.11 gears which has been a wonderful combination. The engine is a 261 with twin carbs, Fenton exhaust and HEI ignition - it is great and will cruise all day at 65 getting 20+ mpg.

Arpee, I think that the camaro and such T5's were 24 spline. The s-10s were 14 spline. Am I correct?

I guess I'll have to go count. I was sure that the disc I bought was a 23 spline but then I'm not all THAT good with numbers! I don't know about the S-10's. I actually combined parts from an S-10 unit with a Camero unit to make the one for my pickup. I used the tail shaft from the S-10 to get the linkage in the right place but it meant I had no speedo drive since it came from a vehicle with an electric speedo. The older 3 speeds, the Muncie 4 speed and the Saginaw 4 speeds I have all have a 10 spline inpput shaft.
As you can see from my address I'm from down here in SD but am working for a Co. who's home office is in Westlock. How about that? You may have heard of Lehman Trikes? I head up their Product Support area for US operations.

Could be Arpee, I was trying to find it again but can't seem to find if it was a 24 or 23, but it don't really matter anyways.
The name sounds familiar but can't really remember. neato!

Colin, I finally counted the splines last night. It is 26! We were REALLY close! The early ones are 10.
