I recently started restoring a 1932 chevy pickup. it has the enclosed driveline. the clutch is stuck, as the often do after sitting. I am wondering if there is a way to pull the tranny on this old truck without pulling the engine?? does the driveline come apart somehow so you can disconnect it from the tranny?
thanks for helping out a new "old" guy | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 684 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 684 | If this is a 1/2 ton pickup you can probably remove the 4 bolts holding the ball joint retainer, Slide the ball back on the torque tube and split the universal joint by removing the bolts holding the joint together. If the u-joint is rivited together you will have to unbolt the springs from the differential and slide the rear end back far enough to clear the u-joint. The larger trucks have the rivited u-joint. I am not sure on the 1/2 ton.

I'll scrape some grease off today and see what I find. I was afraid I'd have to take those rusted old springs loose. I better spray them down now!

I had a friend back in high school who got pinned under a torque tube when he disconnected it from the transmission on a 47 Chevy 2-door sedan. He had jack stands under the axle housing instead of the frame, and there was a lot of tension on the springs. He got away with some bruises and a couple of cracked ribs, but it could have been much worse!

I already ordered a manual. I had enough sense to put the jacks under the frame not the axle housing and I tied up the driveline with a rope before pulling it back.. all went well and the tranny is on the floor!
