Hy chevy dog, I don't want to be a downer, but are you sure it's a 409, and not a 348. According to my Canadian parts book the 409 was not offered as an option until the 80 series. Of course someone could have swapped it in there. As to the tranny, it looks like the stock transmission for that application was a Clark, either a close ratio [2653V], or a wide ratio, no mention of overdrive in either of those. Anything could have been changed in the last 45 years to keep the truck going, so get under there and look for some numbers on things, hope that helps.

Pad in front of RH head should have numbers stamped on it that will offer the engine model. Also casting numbers on rear of block. Clark 282 and 285 trannys were popular in the 60-70's GM trucks.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that it was an od tranny. It was if fact a 409 (only reason I bought it). I checked the block and head numbers and there was even an engine option tag(metal)on the drivers side door jamb. It was a cab over.
What I'm working on now is a '67 One ton GMC 351 E, was a factory rv, 77k original miles. Orange, factory buckets, speedminder. Haven't had it long. Did get the camper off and making plans for a flatbed soon. Wanted an overdrive tranny for it. What would be another good option for a manual tranny? Wheelbase is 157" is that standard for one tons? Will have pictures soon. Because everyone loves pictures! Thanks again for the info.

Truck type manual transmissions with overdrive aren't real easy to come by. The New Venture options aren't great, but may be what you need to look at.

157 inches seems long. I don't recall exact numbers for that series of trucks, but I'm thinking 1-ton pickups were about 127 and about 137.

My '89 extended-cab long-box pickup is 155 if memory is correct. You have a long 1-ton cab and chassis.

You know...I'm thinking what you really need is a 283 and you should just give that old boat anchor 409 to me.
