The 56 was a truck motor, complete with bell housing, flywheel, 11" clutch. Have an old style bell housing i'm going to use. My question: Can I use the flywheel, clutch package and 12V starter from the 56 with this bell housing? Also, the old style bell housing I picked up has the bosses for the pedals, but no drilled and tapped holes, I plan to add them, is there any other difference.

#59312 04/18/2006 1:32 AM | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 | If the flywheel will mount on the crank shaft (ie line up with the bolt holes and pin) then the only question is if the gear in your starter works with the number of teeth on the flywheel ring gear. The older 6 volt starters had less teeth and the newer 12 volt starters had more. They don't match up and a newer crank won't work with an older starter, or visa versa. Of course you can change the ring gear on the flywheel if you want to use it and I'm sure those ring gears are available at NAPA, having looked into it for my truck.

The bigger flywheel would be the only thing I would check - might get a bit tight.
