I'm hauling a 46 1 1/2 ton (PK) home from the field it's been in for years, but am intimidated by the size of it (I'm used to British sports cars). My trailer will handle a bit over 5k on it; does this truck weigh more than that? It says "12,000 gross" on the doors, and if I do the math - 1 1/2 ton payload (right?) is 3000 pounds, subtracted from 12,000 is 9,000 pounds. That just doesn't seem right.
Help?

Specs.....
from what I can tell it may weigh as much as 4635 total curb weight for a truck w/a flatbed...Joe

Joe is right!

My info shows a 46 1 1/2 ton with platform and stake rack at 4635 lbs.

Depends what you have for a platform and box I guess but shouldn't be much more than that.

I saw that specs sheet too and that's what set off my massive confusion. If the truck is a "1 1/2" ton, doesn't that mean it has a load capacity (in/on the bed) of 3000 pounds? If so, then the combined gross vehicle weight should be truck+load=CGVW, correct? Which brought me to truck+3000=12,000, or truck=9,000.

If the specs show a truck gross weight of 5,000 (rounded for ease of math) and the combined gross vehicle weight is 12,000, then the payload is 7,000 - that's 3 1/2 tons! What am I missing??

Thanks for help!

Brian

The 4635 lbs is what the truck weighs when it drives across a scale with nothing else but the truck itself. The gross weight should be the weight of the truck plus its total load capacity...Joe

It all depends on the axel rating on your trailer. If you have 5k axels, then it is a pretty safe bet. I have hauled (had hauled) several 1.5 and 2 ton trucks on a regular car trailer and everything was fine. It is a load, but seems to work fine. You will more than likely have to remove one or both outer rear wheels to get it on the trailer if there are any side rails on it.

One thing to remember is that they look intimidating because of the size, but it doesn't weigh that much more than an extra cab modern pickup truck. All that said, I wouldn't want to have to stop quickly with one of those on the trailer...take it very easy and cautious!

Joe,
I've got the GVW definition, what I don't understand is what is meant by a 1 1/2 ton truck. I go back to my math, and I'm missing something.

Tomcoe,
My trailer is rated for 7k, 3500 per axle. Trailer weighs 1700, so that means I can safely put another 5300 on it. I imagine it will hold plenty more, but I used the word "safely" to mean it is rated to hold that much weight. If the truck does weigh 4635, I'm with plenty of margin. And I have brakes on both axles, so I just need to make sure it's secured well and should be good.

Thanks guys.

Well, finally was able to bring the beast home yesterday. It fit on the trailer OK, but trailer flexed a bit more than I would have like. It made the 8 miles home just fine. Check out the nice curve the trailer had. Flattened out once I got the truck off...

You got THAT truck! I saw that one (Craigslist right or was that on this swap section?) I had a natural liking for it. He's got a good feel to him, glad he has a new home and u made it safely.

Tomcoe,

Yeah, I wish you were able to take this guy home. The PO kept a diary since he bought the truck (as he did with all vehicles I pulled off this property) and it looks like it was stored in a barn from 1973 to 1992 when he bought the truck at 71,886 miles. Today he's got 72,045 on the odo. This truck is in really nice condition, and reading thru the PO's diary, it give the direction to focus on - right rear wheel cylinder, adjusting valves, etc. He even documented changing the gear oil in the diff and tranny. Sure wish I could find a home for this guy...

Dang, no takers yet for 500. The shipping would cost more than the truck for me...unless it comes with free shipping! smile

plus, the hospital bill, and the permant scaring from my wonderful wifie....who has allowed almost 30 vehicles on our property to date! keep us posted on his finding a home, because I'll be as interested as you almost!
