The Rochester on my truck didn't come with a tag. It's in pretty good shape, and I suspect that it may be a Remanufactured Carb. it hasn't been working quite right so I just want to make sure that it got all the right parts and pieces. I'm hoping that someone will be able to tell me if these are the correct parts for a 1954 Chevy 3100 w/ 3 spd tranny. I'm hoping that Carbking will chime in and enlighten a young grasshopper...

Throttle Body - 700452_ _ (can't make out the last two numbers)
Float Bowl - 7004497-C-4
Airhorn - 7004510, 4509
Main Well Support - C11, 3820, 4623

which is one of the service bulletins listed on that page, and took apart my carb hoping to compare numbers, and NONE of them matched, not one.

So...either I have the wrong carb for my year of truck, or the service bulletin shows the part #'s for "assemblies", which probably wouldn't be the same number as just the individual parts themselves....

maybe I'm in denial. (not the river in egypt)

Ok, I searched a number of the other bulletins and it's the same deal. I couldn't get a single part number to match up. Does someone have a Rochester Parts Manual or something similiar??

Your question is one that has plagued enthusiasts for some time; and unfortunately, has no EASY or economical answer.

First, the numbers you list are casting numbers. You will not find these numbers in any Rochester publication. They are a “part” number for the unmachined casting. The casting can then be machined in a variety of ways, and the machined casting will then be given an actual part number (which may appear in a Rochester parts book). Note that several DIFFERENT part numbers may result from different machining of the castings.

There is a partial list of casting numbers in one of the Chevrolet Master Parts books. I posted this list on these forums some years ago; possibly the search function will find it. However; IT IS NOT TOTALLY INCLUSIVE!

The only way of which I am aware that these carburetors? can be positively identified is to take them apart, and set down with the prints for the individual castings, measure airbleeds, different machinings etc. to come up with the part numbers; and then search the Rochester parts book for those numbers.

Is is worth the effort? Each individual must answer that question for themselves. We have hundreds of unidentified Rochester B’s WHICH WE ARE NEVER GOING TO ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY! Not worth the effort for us.

My suggestions:

(A) If the vehicle in question is a “numbers matching show vehicle”, determine what should be the original carb, and watch ebay for a TAGGED original.
(B) If the vehicle is a driver, then replace with a tagged carburetor that is known to be a replacement for your vehicle.

One more question...

I've never used one of these Master Parts Catalogs, and I need help reading it.

Under 3.730 Horn Assembly, most say "w/ main well assembly (stamped XXXX)". Are they describing the number that would be stamped on the main well assembly? or on the airhorn?

My conflict is... that if I use my main well # (stamped 4623) it would leads me to believe that it for a 54-57 COMM UTIL (6 cyl). But If I assume that they are talking about the airhorn number (stamped 4509), it points to a 50-53 ALL w/ 216.

While it impossible to totally identify a Rochester B carburetor from the casting numbers, we do have a listing of casting numbers which were used on some of the more common Chevrolet Rochester B carburetors. These castings were machined a variety of ways, and therefore castings (with different machining) will be used on different carburetors (some that are not even Chevrolet). In any event, perhaps this list will help:
