Bob,

I pulled the gear from the fron of my 1942 216 motor so I could get the camshaft out. After breaking my old gear puller, I gently heated the gear - trying to keep the heat to the gear and not the shaft.

Some taps with a punch to allow the liberally applied penatrating oil to soak in eventually yielded a seperate gear and shaft. Also try applying and releasing teh pressure from the gear puller a few times - this seemed very effective.

The gear on the end of the cam does need to be pressed off. Good luck.

I just removed the crank and cam gears in my shop using gear pullers, penetrating oil, propane torch, impact wrench, and a brass drift. They did not come willingly, but they did come off w/o damage. I had the crank gear under a great amount of tension from the gear puller, heated the gear all the way around with the torch, applied penetraiting oil to the seams and then I struck the gear with the brass drift and the gear just popped loose. I removed the cam gear by placing cam gear on top of the opened jaws of my vice with the cam pointing towards the floor and heated the gear w/ the torch again. Then I used a large brass drift and a hammer to drive the cam out of the cam gear. Good luck and wear a face shield and gloves in case the puller gives way before the gear! eek

When I was telling my machinist how proud I was after pulling my crankshaft timing gear, he told me that I had done it the hard way. He said the way to do it is to give it some sharp raps with a chisel, between the teeth right over the keyway. Apparently those gears are so hard that they can be cracked quite easily. Apparently that location causes maximum stress on the gear.

drill a hole through the gear. then use a chisel to split it on top of the drilled hole between the teeth.

I chiseled mine off, since I was replacing it anyhow I didn't care if it came of in one piece, just that I didn't damage the cam/crank.

Fact is that you don't need to remove the cam gear to get the cam out, but to get the backing plate away from the crank you do need to get that one off, unless you just want to have the machine shop do it for you while they have the crank.
