Transmission serial numbers are listed for some years in these manuals. (look in the Serial Numbers or Serial Number Locations sections).

An old Hollander is usually the most valuable publication for identifying things. It was used by salvage yards. The manufacturers were never really interested in informing people what would fit except for the original oem part.
