I think the seal is almost origional its rock hard. | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 337 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 337 | If you want to reuse the glass, the best way to remove it is to cut the seal around the perimeter of the glass. There is a groove for the glass, and another behind it that goes over the pinch weld on the body. The gasket itself holds the glass in place. There's a 50/50 chance whether there is any sealer glueing the whole mess to the cab, the gasket turns to wood over time anyway and with or without adhesive it's very tough cutting through the gasket. A soapy lubricant may help get the blade through.
If you have stainless trim around the glass, do not attempt to remove it before the glass. The trim is inserted in the gasket, then mounted on the glass, and the assembly is then installed in the truck. The trim must be removed from the gasket after the glass is removed from the truck in order to avoid damage. | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 337 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 337 | One more thought, it may be easier to cut the perimeter of the seal from inside the cab. It can be done from inside or outside, but sometimes the interior has has been better protected from the elements and isn't so rigid. | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | i like to just cut into the rubber with a box knife at a angle to where it cuts into the upper channel near the edge of the glass on the outside. once you do it you will see it's pretty easy. then it can be easily pushed out. it will cur it even though it's hard. good luck. | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 | Keep in mind to be VERY careful not to nick the glass or put too much pressure on it when you cut the seal, or you'll be hunting for a new windshield. Also, I would make sure the glass is good and warm when you try to pull it, the cold makes it a lot more prone to cracking. I was going to buy a windshield from a guy I knew for my daily driver, and I even brought him a special seal cutting tool. He didn't let it warm and put a little too much pressure on the glass in one of the corners, suffice to say I didn't get the windshield. | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 42 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 42 | well bummer i was trying to lift the cab off with a chain hoist and the boards broke in half up in the rafters, and bam! the hoist hit the glass...guess I'm part of the club looking for a windsheild now. | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 | Wow, that sucks! Look at the bright side, you learned to use bigger boards next time, and the windshield will come out easy Time to hit up craigslist and the swapmeet! | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 42 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 42 | yes most definatly. stupid rookie mistake. | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 | Everyone makes mistakes like that at some point. Maybe not that exact thing but... we all have our own. I had a wheel fall off my jetta at 60 mph because I spent an entire night replacing my struts, strut mounts, and a few other things. I did a really quick job of cleaning up and putting things away because I was exhausted, and I forgot to tighten the lugs on one wheel. That was an interesting ride! | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 42 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 42 | true. well anyways i got the cab off with no other damage. used a cherry picker and 4 2x4's all screwed to gether to make it a 4x4 and it did the job. anyone got a cab for sale? ahaha | | |
