Ok, I know there must have been talk about this sometime but I couldn't find anything with a few searches.

My buddy has this 51 AD and wants a little more top end for the freeway.

It has a 59ish 235 (stock) with a 57 Passenger car rear end with 3.70 gears.

It currently has a compound low 4 speed.

What is needed for the T-5 swap and what years are the transmissions found in.

Basically, you can use any T5. A T-5 hybrid will not require you to cut the snout pilot or the bearing carrier, or elongate the splines.

T5's can be found in the 1982 - 1998 S-10's with the desireable rear casting (although you can buy this from a few vendors)
Astro Vans from 1985 - 1988 had the T5 as an option behind both the 4 cylinder and the 4.3 V6, (the V6 has the better spline lengths)
The Camaro units are canted 15 degrees to move the shifter to the driver, however if you change the rear casting, this isnt an issue. The Camaro units came in the 1" 14 tooth version for the 4 and 6 cylinders and a 1 5/32" 26 tooth version for the V8. 1996 and later camaros used a box more closely to a ford box than a GM box
The Ford units have a larger bearing carrier (5" vs 4.68"). The 93 Cobra unit is the strongest US production T5.

Hope this helps.

There is a lot of info in the tech tips on this. You will need to drill out the mounting holes to 1/2 in. Cut the input shaft & coller down the the same length as the old trans. You need a special clutch disc. with fine splines to fit the trans shaft. Put the clutch disc on the shaft till it stops & mark it. Grind the splines on the shaft so the clutch will go on about 3/8 to 1/2 in further. After getting the trans in measure for a drive shaft & have yours modified to fit. Practically any yoke from a GM auto trans will fit except a 400. If you have any Questions get on here. There are many Stovebolters that have done this & will help.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

you only need to cut the input shaft down if you use a 14 spline input shaft version. The 26 spline is shorter and fits properly
