My motor makes noise at idle, sounds like a dry bearing crossed with a straight cut gear.
It doesn't sound like the alternator.

It does not amplify with higher revs and I don't notice it driving down the road.

Could it be normal timing gear whine?

Thank you,

Ray

If it's got an aluminum cam gear, they're a little more noisy than the fiber gear. The metal gear lasts a little longer, however. If you're not sure about the source of the noise, drop the fan belt off for a short time, and see if the belt-driven accessories are contributing to the whine. Also have someone push the clutch pedal down and see if the noise changes. The throwout bearing, and the transmission cluster gear bearings can also make some strange noises.

Thanks Jerry,
Depressing the clutch doesn't change things, but my sm420 definitely makes some noise of it's own, noting alarming.

I'm going to remove the belt to rule out the water pump and alternator.

It disappears under load which makes me think it might be the gears.
It is an aluminum timing gear

It was less noticeable with a different carb, does that make any sense?
