I'm here because I am considering a few projects. I can pick up a 49 1/2ton step pretty cheap, looking more for a 67-72 though. I have an almost 2 year old son that I hope to one day get under a few hoods instead of buried in a cell phone. Only truck I have ever had was 87 chevy 1/2ton, so I'm pretty new to this. All I know is I need something to do and I was thinking, what better to do than build/rebuild what I've always wanted! This looks like a great community of people here . I will try and upload pictures of the 49 I am considering, haven't been to it in person yet so its hard to tell the true condition of it. | | | | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 4 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 4 | | | | | Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,229 Red dot, center of chest ... | Red dot, center of chest ... That's a fairly new Iowa tag, so the truck hasn't been parked too long, I don't think. It may start and run with just a little work. The cab corners aren't rusted through, there doesn't appear to be anything but surface rust anywhere, the bed is even in good shape. I don't even see any dents, which is remarkable for what looks like it was a farm truck. If you don't buy it, I'd be shocked if someone nearby didn't jump on it quickly. | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 829 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 829 | Welcome to the 'Bolt! As Paul said, you could probably make some money on it if the price is right. It looks like a 3/4 ton, so parts are a little more scarce. You could always part it out, help out the folks looking for certain parts(like running boards and beds), and turn a little profit for yourself. | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Part it out.... NO NO NO.... that truck is way to nice to part out and it will give you hours of satisfaction not to mention riding your little boy in it My kids loved to ride in the old 50 pickup back when I had it and you could ride the kids on the back....slowly of coarse. They will never forget it. That truly looks like a good fun project without a lot of headaches many of us have to contend with...mainly body work! | | | | Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,229 Red dot, center of chest ... | Red dot, center of chest ... I had a similar 51 back in the late 70's. Loved to hit the starter with my foot. Good idea about your son. My 20 yyear old was riding with me in Ginger (my 63) one day and said,"Daddy, why you like this ol truck so much, does it make you feel young again?" I just look at him and smiled. Did I mention I didn't start having kids until I was 35? I do feel great when messing with old stuff as I work with my head all day, getting greasy is a blast. Welcome to the forum. It's all there. That truck is too good to part out. Jump on it. | | | | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 4 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 4 | Thanks guys for the warm welcome. If you had to guess, how much you think the guy selling that 49 is asking? I don't really know if its a good price or not, I can afford it either way though. edit: the guy sellings wife said it was running not long ago, but she couldnt remember what it needs to run. I couldnt get ahold of the husband. Im pretty sure its a fair price, they asking 2000 for it, and may take less who knows.

Up on there is a 60 apache in running driving shape, I have really been on the fence between these 2 and a few others. its in primer and needs a little body work paint and interior according to him. I was thinking maybe starting with something like this (closer to complete) would be better for me to get my feet wet. ~~~Always helps that my uncle owns a body and paint shop!~~ | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 118 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 118 | I like the blue one. If it runs it will clean up nice. Some brakes some tires. Then just drive it. Some of the simpler trucks w/ 6 bangers and 3 or 4 speeds make for cheap in town fun. The 60 is not as high in value as other yrs. All the extras or upgrades if not done right are worthless (if not done right).I figure mine only worth 3 to maybe $3500.Not a great resale value.Although Ilike my truck. Start the blue one, offer maybe 15 and see what happens.19 could be very fair price if a driver.

With all those modifications (done by other people), it's harder to figure out what you need when something isn't working right. There is also a question of how good the Previos owner/builder was. If you don't know the telltale signs of shady work, you could end up buying a real headache.
With a stock truck, you know alot by simply having a manual.

The 49 looks to be in really good condition. Plus it is way more sexy than the 60 model.
edit addition: The 60 stopped being "rare" when it started getting modified.
