Why do you assume your suspension needs replacing? Is it just because "everybody says to"?

thumbs_up Gudday,
What you gonna do with the truck?
Daily high-speed, high traffic constant use, or the odd drive aound a quiet road on a fine weekend?
If it has a complete stock front end, get it re-coed and drive away!
Perfectly fine for the casual user that does'nt expect modern day characteristics from their old truck.

High usage at speeds in heavy traffic, you might consider justifying the time/money of an IFS upgrade.
I've used a Jaguar front end in my '36, you can see the photo's in my P_Bucket site below.
But if you look around, there are many different options available that are alot cheaper than a Mustang II or Hot-Rod style front end.(Nova,S-10 etc.)

Decide how the truck is to be used before you go and pull it apart or spend any money.

Best of luck..........Doc.

Well everyone that I talk to they tell me that a straight axel front end is sloppy it rides hard and it's hard to maintain. I have been studding this carefully and I think I'll scrap the whole frame (not literally) and just set it on an S-10 frame, or better yet grafting an AWD Safari v-6 and making an AWD 36 truck...........aaaaahhh I don't know I'll just put it on the back burner for now. and keep researching.

Also a lot depends on your expertise & facilities. A lot of good trucks have been butchered up & a lot of owners have been overwelmed & dumped the project. If you farm out most of the work you have a fortune invested & still sometimes the quality is questionable. If these trucks are repaired to original standards with some upgrades for modern driving they are very driveable. We used to drive them up & down the roadsc all the time back when they & us were young.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

If you really want your truck to ride like a modern car, then fit a modern front suspension clip, but there's no need to do all that work just to make your truck drive properly.

I still have the straight axle in my '50 1/2 ton. With rebuilt springs, new king pins, spring shackles and bushings, there's no slop or wander, it rides dead straight at 70 MPH on British Motorways (Highways) and at 80 MPH (130 KPH) on European Autoroutes. As well as re-conditioning the axle I have put some simple upgrades on the front end; sway bar, disc brakes and the CPP Sagninaw power steering conversion.

Good luck with your truck whichever way you go, Stuart.
