Have a 3 speed tranny that I'm rebuilding in conjunction with my engine rebuild. I pulled the speedo gear which has been working fine. I also had bought a NOS speedo gear off Ebay which was supposedly for my tranny. They are exactly the same except for the gear itself. My gear teeth are oriented one direction (lean left) and the new unit gear goes the other direction (leans right). Other than that problem, they are exactly the same. Any ideas?

Four speed gears slant the opposite way of three speed. I have a good supp;y of three speed gears is you still need one.

Thanks Dave! Knew that there had to be some reason for it. Ya get what ya get when you buy off EBay. Well, I'll just resell it. My old one worked fine so I'll clean it up and put it back. Thanks for the offer!

49 Geezer, I may be interested in the speedo gear does it look anything like this one? This one is out of a SM420 4-speed tranny.

-Speedometer Gear assembly, Part# 3686314, measures: 3-3/8” long, part that screws into rear bearing retainer has 13/16” fine threads, Gear is ¾” in diameter and 5/8” long, and cable connection end has 7/8” threads.

Dave I need a speedometer gear for my Saginaw three speed, long tail transmission. Number on trans tail GM 8732-3790670-20 teeth count-No on shifting case-3845157. About 13/4 inches long. Got one? Transmission is 28 inches overall. Someone stole my gear when I left it at a repair shop. Appreciate any help..

I'll look tomorrow and let you know. I think, by looking at your picture, that the one I have is identical.

Edabbs; I check my donor tranny to see if the numbers match and if the speedo gear looks okay in that one.

Edabbs, about what year is your trans?

Dave Re your question-I think it is an early 60s trans as I ran it in my 62 1/2 ton truck for years. First gear is not sincronized so I have to be careful in shifting to first. If you have the part let me know. the 1 1/2 inch length is how far it goes into the trans with the speedometer connector sticking out of course. Thanks for checking this out.

Here's a link to a couple of pictures of the gear. Information I got when I bought it was p/n 3686353, then VCI E9, person who sold it to me said it was 12 teeth, then numbers 4.337 (7.5210) Supposedly fits 47-50 FC and 51 to 53 100-22 according to him. That's all I know about it. Private message me if you're interested in buying it.
