The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Got it running today!!! Well mostly anyway

Background: 1589 Apache 3200 235 3 on the tree - bone stock never rebuilt 58k miles.
Found in a garage - not run for 15 years.

I brought the truck home in March & have tinkered here & there with it since then.

The first thing I did was install a new modern rear main seal. Thanks for the help from the forum by the way - I never would have known about a sneaky pete otherwise.

Then I cleaned the tank & replace the fuel lines & found the pump was bad.
New pump & I rebuilt my first carb only to find I screwed it up.

The new carb arrived today! - Of course it didn't fit. I was so pi$$ed if you know what I mean.
I was able to use the lower half of my old carb & the top half (bowl & float etc) from the rebuilt one & varoom - off the the races.

Except it was only kicking on 3 cyls. A new set of sparklers & I was on the highway man - cruise city!

I am so tickled with myself. I have always been a tinkerer but honestly this was the first dead horse I ever resurrected.

I still have a ton of work to do before I would consider it safe, but it is a real running truck right now. The only smoke came from my oil filter leak. That's on the list.

My immediate fix for now is the brake lights. Once I have those I can actually drive on the road.

No need to apologize about the "blog." Many people do it here, especially me! Now that you have the truck running, I wouldn't forget about the brakes or steering though either, unless you've already inspected those, and the brakes could probably use a complete overhaul anyway after not being used in 15 years right? Congratulations on your resurrection and I look forward to seeing more about your progress.

Nothing quite like getting it up and running, eh? Like Jordan noted, make sure them brakes are up to the task, don't want to have an accident due to a brake failure.
O/T, I don't get back with you on this, but I'm on the north end of Danville, up by Lake Vermilion. Bismarck-Henning graduate, Class of '89. Do have a few cousins that went to Westville, though.

so the brakes work - but I have no plans to leave them alone. I see you can get the power brakes for about $200. I figure it won't cost that much to just redo all 4 corners. The wheel cyls are only about $20 each & the new lines will be pretty cheap. I bet I could do the whole job for less than $400. That is a ton cheaper than an ol' ladys caddy bumper.

Bismark - good school - I was also 89 but I can't remember if I knew anyone from Bismark.

Anyway - I'm glad to be up and running - I am on vacation this week so I will get lots of wrench time!

Cool. Whne you get those wheel cylinders, make sure that they get the right ones for a 3200, as they are different. The 3200 uses the same wheel cylinders as a 3600, and the bore sizes are different. Also, the fronts are side specific. You can use 3100 hoses on the front, though, they're just a bit longer than the 3200 parts.

Don't forget that if you are going to do a system over haul to replace the brake hoses. They might look good but can blow at any time. Just passing on info I've been told.

I need to replace the hoses and wheel cylinders on my 58 1/2 ton. Is there a good place to buy these cheap?

Rockauto.com is where I goth the ones for my '54. They were the cheapest place I could find.
