The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Rattling e-brake

Hello, I just started driving my 1960 C-60 I rebuilt it from the bottom up. But now that it's all clean and painted the e-brake shoes want to rattle at higher speeds. The nice insulating coat of dust,chaff and oil were quite a soundproofer. In the spirit of quieting the cab noise down I thought someone might have done something to address this problem. Additional springs? Different adjusting sequence.????? Thanks for any replies. Also, anyone have a numeral "60" for the 1960 model year. Passenger side?.....

Hy Beewrangler, does your truck have a single outer band type parking brake, or is it the two shoe type? the parts book I have doesn't say which type is used in a 1960 60 series. By the way the numbers are the same side to side.

I have the two shoe type. I set it up right to the book and I get a rythmic rattle at higher speed. I'm almost thinking I should back off the adjustment more so there is more clearance. I relined my shoes during the restoration and don't want the brake to be weak just because of a little rattle. Thanks about the numbers too I didn't have another one to compare.

Hy Beewrangler, I was afraid you were going to tell me you had the two shoe type, I don't have very much experience with that type. Could it be that the drum itself is out of round, and bumps the shoes around as it turns? Most of the parking brake drums I've seen over the years have some kind of damage, scars, belled in, that kind of thing. I doubt there are too many trucks out there that haven't had there parking brakes left on by accident, for a few miles at a time.
