For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 142 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2008 Posts: 142 | Have 1946 Wrecker, and want to be able to remove the bed and drive away from it. The bed is heavy, and want to be able to lift it from the four corners of the bed. Has anyone done this? If so, how did you lift it safely? I do not have access to a overhead hoist or lift. Then want to be able to crawl under it knowing it is secure. If you ever figure out how to lift it safely, be sure you block the doodle out of it, so it doesn't have a chance of coming down on you. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xM6S1O620.../cYicXwdH13U/s400/Shadetree+Mechanic.bmp A day without laughter is a day wasted- Charlie Chaplin When wrestling a grizzly bear, you have to keep at it until the bear gets tired, not when you get tired. 1948 Chevy 2-Ton | | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 117 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2009 Posts: 117 | make saw horses out of steel, thick wall pipe is best you need four and put one at each corner then use thick square steel tubing to go across the saw horses. with a bed that heavy i wouldnt go with anything under 4"x4" and very thick | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 | 46Canopy, The mast, booms and winch could be unbolted and removed first to lighten the load. Then lift the service body. Or, if you don't want to take it all apart pay someone with a small crane to lift it for you. I lifted a Holmes 525 off of a junk truck using my 1956 Chevy with a 525 on it. The complete assembly will weigh about 4500#. You can set it on GOOD jack stands just like you would the truck. I can send pictures if you send me your email address. Found out removing the first 515, that it wasn't a good idea to remove the crane from the Body. Damaged the body, & the crane isn't stable sitting on the ground. Before removing the second 515, I decided to start welding the rear stiff legs to the platform floor, & directly bolting the front crane to the plateform floor. I would then get someone with a Medium Duty Hydraulic Boom Wrecker to lift the complete unit up, then pull, or drive the trucks from under it. I used stacked truck tire, & rims, at the back of the unit, & dropped the outrigger legs to the desired height in the front. Just removed the Holmes W35 Wrecker unit from the '46 Chevy I had, in this manner last Summer. | | |
