Hello all..
Got a 1963 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 327 in it and HEI.

I got one wire from the starters' solenoid, to a wire coming off the fire wall (just to the right of of the black heater box) That runs back to the ignition.

I got another wire from the BATT terminal on the HEI straight to the battery.

When I turned the key (never tried motor till now) it fired right up but it wouldn't turn off. Anyone got any ideas?

Also, when it started, the motor was running full blast, and it did that for at least 8 seconds before I could get to the battery and disconnect it. Do you think that messed anything up? WHy would it be full blast like that? I checked the carburetor and It looked like all was well. ie: it wasn't stuck in tons-of-gas-mode.

To make this more interesting, I noticed that some oil had shot out of what I thought must have been one of the holes on the valve cover without a hose attached to it. Does this mean I have blow by? Does it mean that since the engine ran full blast for those eight seconds that I screwed up the rings as a result?

Any help would calm me down considerably! Thanks

papa;
I think you've got more than one issue here. The reason you couldn't shut it off is because that "batt" terminal on the HEI should go to the "run" terminal of the ignition switch so that when you turn the key off the HEI doesn't get power anymore.

As to why it ran "full blast" - make sure the throttle plate in your carb is completely shut when your foot is off the petal. The idle screw or a stuck linkage could hold it open. Did you put starter fluid or raw gas into the carb, that might have done it too.

I doubt that running for 8 seconds would hurt the engine too bad although it certainly didn't do it any good. That open hole in the valve cover probably needs to connect to the carb through a pcv valve. Make sure any vacuum ports on the carb and manifold are either connected to something or plugged.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Hopefully others will chime in.

Wow! Thanks so much for your reply, I will try that tomorrow and post back here with the results. I appreciate all the support from the people on this site. One day I hope to have a little knowledge so that I may help someone like you just did with me. Thanks!

I fired up a newly rebuilt engine once and after a few minutes of running, oil started coming out of the DIPSTICK TUBE! Turns out the PCV valve was not connected to the carb and so no crankcase pressure was being "sucked out." Hooked the pcv valve to carb and no more oil problems!

OK, oil problem solved...LOL The oil pressure tube that goes to oil pressure gauge was sitting right there open (where I found the oil). A friend came by and confirmed what Waldo53 stated above and he also found that there were 3 places on the carb that were substantial vacuum leaks which he said could def cause high rpm upon starting.

I have yet to rewire it, but I am certain that will fix the problem with it not shutting off. Anyway, thought the vacuum leak theory might be of interest to some of you for future or past problems.
