so here I have a new headliner I am installing on my '53 1/2 ton. Two questions 1) first, which piece should be installed 1st the front or rear? 2) more importantly, I have forgotton which way the center strip goes. Looks like it could work either way, but I'm not sure if the front section slips into the "deepest" groove or does the rear? It apparantly will make a difference in that when properly installed, one section (front or rear) will be "top" (closest) to the cab of the truck, and the other will be "lower"....anyone follow?

Don't know for sure since I haven't done mine yet but at first glance it just seems logical that you would insert the front, then the divider strip then slip the back into it and finally screw the rear trim strip in place.

Yes, I think this would be the logical route based on what I'v read from others. However, I still have no idea which way to "turn" the center strip. Can someone go out and look at theirs and tell me if the back or front is tucked insidde of the "deepest" portion of the strip?

The front half goes in first, and the "deepest" portion of the metal strip mounts on the front half. Then the rear half mounts into the "shallow",or lower remaining portion of the metal strip.

While you have it apart, you might consider installing some sound/heat proofing material.
