Were these engines eqipped with that from the factory or could it be something somebody added later on. What oil prfessure does it run now when hot at idle? Does it knock more after warm or does it change at all while warmiing up?

The filter could have been factory, but most liley was a dealer installed ad-on, especially if it is a Fram instead of AC.
From what I can tell, it sounds like you may have a rod bearing going sour. I would pul the pan and inspect the rods for exsessive play. A teardown might be in order, especially if the crank is damaged.

Although my guesstimates have been running poorly as of late, I will say that your explanation isn't consistent with a bad rod bearing in my estimation.
You should be able to make a rod knock at any RPM if you float the throttle. It wouldn't be necessary to bring the engine up to 1300 RPM. Have you looked at, or listened to the crank pulley or the water pump pulley. Wiggle stuff around a bit.
