Hi all,

49 Chev Truck. I hooked up a 12v battery to my 6v starter. I notice I only get a couple cranks before the starter disconnects from the flywheel. Is this common when running 12v? The motor continues to spin at a rapid rate after, and while it slows it sometimes grinds to a stop.

Let me know,

David

starter needs cleanup, especially the nose and gear, maybe a broken spring - 12V runs a 6V starter just fine, if the starter is good

Sounds to me like your linkage has worn sloppy and isn't holding the gear all the way into the meshed position.

David,

You state the "motor continues to spin at a rapid rate" which sounds to me like a bad starter drive. The extra punch of the 12 volts has taken the old starter drive and stripped its guts.

A new starter drive is pretty cheap and easy to install.

I'll pull it tomorrow, and clean it up. Then re-post the status with some pictures.

Hi all,

I took the starter apart, and didn't notice anything out of order, but i could have some play somewhere.

Couple things of note: When the engine runs, the starter continues to grind/drag ever so slightly. If I pull the started pedal back hard enough inside the cab it doesn't drag anymore. The external linkage looks solid.

Do the the internal parts ever wear?

maybe a missing spring on the linkage?

David,

The starter drive has a sprag clutch inside of it. You can't see this mechanism and it can appear to be fine manipulating it by hand, but when under power, it will slip. This allows the starter motor to spin but not the gear that is engaged with the ring gear.

If your starter is still partially engaged when the engine is running then your linkage is not retracting properly. There is a spring on the starter that should take care of that. Running it like that will damaged the drive.

I've been running my 6 v starter on 12 v for years in my 46. The starter does spin faster and my starter does not crank more than a couple of times before it dis-engages. Sounds allot like you describe, only no grinding sound. One thhing I did a couple o months ago, put an HEI ignition. Got it from Jim Carters, what a difference! It's unusual to get a couple of cranks before it starts!

I've been running 12v in my '50 using it's original starter for 6+ years and the gear has always come back into its resting place.
