I am planning on purchasing some aftermarket inner fenders for my 64.
I'm not fully confident that I trust the paint job that comes on these to protect the metal for the long run. It's not that I plan on running my truck through the winter months and the salt roads however I do want to drive it and not be concerned if it rains or maybe even take it out for a deer hunt. After all it is a truck.
I use PPG products and for a primer I use DP Epoxy primer.
I don't want to media blast a brand new part so I am looking to paint over the existing finish.
I know I can do a small test area and see if it works (disturbs the existing paint), but I thought I would ask here, anyone ever do this.

The finish that is on them will be a black ELPO primer, just like they use on late models. No need to remove it. Just scuff it with a Scotch Brite, then prime and paint as normal. It will be fine. I did the tailgate nd front bed panel on mine, both were ELPO dipped, had no problems.
BTW, I used PPG products as well.

Well POR 15 wasn't what I had in mind. Every other part of the truck that is painted black uses Dupli-Color Acrylic Enamel (DA 1603). My paint guy said that this would be cheaper to spray than what he would have to mix up and be just as good (actually he said any good rattle can enamel, I chose Dupli-Color).
Changing to a different product will end up with a color mismatch that I don't want to deal with.
Although I did use POR 15 on the frame.

POR15 would reqier stripping to bare metal to get good adhesion, it doesn't stick well to primer.

Good point, I suppose Rusty64 did say he didn't want to media blast the inner fenders.

Be warned that the ELPO will wash away with spilled brake fluid. I've gotta disassemble the fender this winter...

That actually goes for pretty much any primer/paint used in automotive applications. POR15 (or similar product) and powdercoat are about the only coatins no affected by brake fluid.

I know this might be a little off topic but jockbolter what rear end is that in your truck. Was looking through the pictures of your truck and was just curious.

At the risk of incurring the 'wrath of the moderators' it's an '86 Pontiac Firebird Borg Warner rear axle.

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread Rusty!! blush
