First of all I am a little timid to ask because I am sure the information is here somewhere Ii am just a computer RETARD and cannot find it.
I need help on a 1938 1/12 ton brake master cylinder that I am trying to rebuild. I cannot for the life of me get the side of the cylinder that looks like a bolt off. (Not the side the brake plunger shaft goes in but the side that the brake system hooks into) does this side accually come off?
The second question I have is, there is rust on the inside of the cylinder so I was going to soak it in Phosphoric acid and then wash it down wipe if off and rebuild trouble is on the side that hooks to the brake system on the inside there seems to be a silicone type ring? is that normal? when I bought the re-build kit for the cylinder I didn't receive anything that look like this it is at the very back of the cylinder but I cannot get it out cause I cannot get that side of the cylinder off. Please help a very uneducated person out here. any diagrams or pictures of other similar problems would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Ifyou can't get an answer here is a link to buy a shop manual for a 1938: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.lloydsautolit.com/products/stdImages/4058.jpeg&imgrefurl=http://www.lloydsautolit.com/Items/1938%2520Chevroletcar%2520Chevytruck%2520Shop%2520Manual/3844.html&usg=__F0ajm7iaUbfc48MMV5bjQaau68Q=&h=422&w=350&sz=18&hl=en&start=21&um=1&tbnid=UF0s20NC5_XZMM:&tbnh=126&tbnw=105&prev=/images%3Fq%3D1938%2Bchevy%2Btruck%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7GGIT_en%26sa%3DX%26um%3D1

But I'd figure somebody on here has the answer you want. Good luck.

Hy 38 tow, yes the big nut at the end of the master cylinder comes off, try clamping the nut in a vise and turning the master cylinder with a big pipe wrench around the outside, hope that helps.

Thank you both. I did go and buy the book I figured it was about time if I were going to get serious. Thank you also 3b I will continue to soak it with penetration oil then give it another shot. I just had visions of me going to far and braking it off when it wasn't supposed to come off (I Have done that more then once to things) but thank you both for your replies they were helpful.

I would use some heat myself. When I say heat I mean something small like a propane torch.
