Did you change the oil filter? If you do not have an owner's manual with this information, put in oil until it shows "Full" on the dip stick. Start the engine and run it for a few minutes. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes. Look at the dip stick and add oil, if necessary. 20w oil - 10w-30 oil was most likely originally specified but up to 20w-50 oil would most likely be OK (that is what I have always used in my 1960 261). | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | Summer weight is 30W, Winter is 10-20W was originally specified. Multi-weight oils were not available in 51' to the best of my knowledge. it does not hurt them of course. | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | "oil specs on 261"Multi-weight oils were available all years that 261 engine were available; and, in 1954, it looks like GM started to recommend multi-grade oil. This might have be due to the introduction of the high pressure engine but I bet it was due to the prevalence of high-quality multi-grade, detergent oils. | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 338 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 338 | there was another thread going related to ZDDP( https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=528089#Post528089) which i believe is an oil additive. the jist of the conversation was the anount of zinc in the oil and was it necessary to have more zinc or were the modern oils ok. relating that thread to this are you using additives or just running modern oils?
