Planning to start a rebuild on the afore mentioned truck, and planning to stay mostly original, but would like to do some upgrades to the engine,while still retaining good drivabilty. Any suggestions would be appriciated to give me some direction on this.
Also interested in swapping in 5 speed, or an overdrive unit, To try and get a little more than 55 out of the old girl.

You'll need to start by evaluating what you have now, and what you do or don't like about it before you make changes. There's many routes to go, picking the one that is right for you is the most important.

I really like the 60-66 K20s for some reason. Not the most common like a C10.

I really want to keep the toque of the old 292, but would like a little more power, and a higher top end, hence my interest in od trany, again anyone who has played with this, it would be much appcriciated. You say you want more highway speed. Good. What gear ratios do you have now in the diffs? I don't know these trucks real well, but I would guess probably either a 4.56 or 5.13, likely the latter due to the 4WD. How tall are the tires you plan to run after the rebuild? Tire height can greatly affect highway rpm. Find an online calculator and look at the difference between a 30 inch tire and a 36 inch tire. Once you get that figured out, then decide how you want to approach higher gear ratios. You can replacthe the gears to a higher ratio, numerically lower, but you'll lose low speed torque. Then there are overdrives, both internal to the transmission, like a T5, as well as seperate such as a Gear Vendors unit or Ranger. Research them and decide what will work best for you. There is lots of information out there if you know where to start.
