My 55 requires slamming the doors to get them to shut - is there a way to adjust them so that slamming is not required or is this just the way ther're made.

Not familiar with a '55 but shims close gaps. If you can close the gap some other way that's not going to screw something else up, why not? If the manual mentions shims, that's just how it is. Sheetmetal tolerances can be all over the place.
