hi all im new to the forum and own several p/u trucks but we also own a 65 chevy c60 30 foot skoolie it has a small block,5 speed trans and a big old diff.i redid the front brakes and am about to do the rears as they leak.i have done this before on my bros 63 c60 by removing the bearing and sliding out the axle and the tire assembly. im wondering what newer tire/wheel combo will work here and any tips to make this job easier? diff has a 7.20 ratio and is rated at15000 pounds,has 8.25x20 rims.also any tips on torqing up the bearings? happy to be here timbuk

Hy timbuk, does your truck currently have 6 bolt Budd wheels, 10 bolt Budd wheels, or Dayton wheels [cast spoke]?

i think they are 10 bolt budd wheels the front has 5 bolt the lug nuts are flat to the rim and there are no spacers like a dayton thanks for replying 3B

Hy timbuk, could you measure your bolt circle on your wheels, it sounds to me like you have the 5 in front 10 in the rear "Kelsey" wheels. If that is the case your options are a bit more limited, but you could upgrade from tube type to 22.5" tubeless. The bolt circle for "Kelsey" wheels is 7.25"

Hy timbuk, I did some more research, I think your bus has the 5/10 stud on 8.75" bolt circle wheels, I checked the Accuride catalogue, and they have a 22.5" X 6.75" wheel listed there. That would limit the size of tire you could mount on them, but that is only one supplier/manufacture of wheels. Google Canadian Wheels, and send them a message and see what they have available, hope that helps.

Hy timbuk, the rear wheel in your picture appears to be a widow maker, I'm not 100% positive. The front wheel in your picture is a three piece split rim. Send us some other pictures of the rears, widow makers have a square section in the center of the rim, and no visible splits, or obvious muliple pieces. They are very dangerous, and I don't think any tire shop will do anything with them, other than break them down, hope that helps

I don't think it is a "widow-maker." It looks just like my wheels and I din't have a problem getting them worked on.

the rear wheels do not have a square section in the center they also show a rivited edge on the outside around the 16 inch dia. mark rivits are visible in pic i dont want them widow ones! timbuk

hy timbuk, I'm glad you don't have widow makers, it was kind of hard for me to tell from that picture, and I wanted you to make sure what you have. So do all your wheels look the same?

I wish I had those on my 65 C50 wrecker. I also have the ten lug hub piloted 20 inch ones. But mine are the widow makers.
it is not hard to spot in the center where the two pieces of the rim join together.

Timbuk, your wheels look like the wheels on my '65 school bus(35ft). Std. split rims with a ring forming the outter bead. A type that most full service tire shops (that do tires for trucks, heavy equipment, etc.) should have no problem working on.

Out of curiosity, does your bus have a single speed or 2-speed rear end? and if it's a 2-speed, what are the ratios?

tim - those look like the same split rims my 46 GMC had - KalTire on Cliffe should be able to take care of them for ya

thank you so much you guys-a nice bunch of guys you are great to get an outlook on it the front wheels i thought for sure were widowmakers of course i cant really see the rear inside. i thought id throw this one out there.Im pulling the axles to install new brake cylinders and service the brakes I know i can slide out the axle but im thinking id like to undo the wheels(duals) and seperate and put back together so i can take it all apart for flat tire service etc.I dont think they have been of the bus for over 10 years any ideas?Soaking in wd40 as i type...thanks Timbuk

Does the longer part of the shoe that contacts the cylinder rod go on the adjuster side or the trailing side?Hope this makes sence> Is there a c60 manual online somewhere?Thanks guys,everytime i bleed this wheel the guts pop out of the cylinders,so something is up.Could that happen if it was to far from the drum?Timbuk

Hy timbuk, I think we have at least a couple of problems here. If you look at the part of the shoe which contacts the adjuster wheel it is not sitting square, it looks like if you flip it over, it might sit more square to the adjuster, Also those springs don't look correct to me, and my brake catalogue shows a different type of spring for that year, and those springs are shown in a picture of the Bendix self adjusting brakes. My parts book also shows a heat shield over each wheel cylinder. Also when you are bleeding your brakes, adjust them all the way up first, hope that helps.

thanks 3b the heat shields were not on 1 side and pretty much toast on the other,and yes i believe they are reversed.Kinda makes sense the srpings are wrong also. once again the hands of time have been here!timbuk

Hy timbuk, I checked my Raybestos catalogue and found a number for a spring and hardware kit p/n H9200, thats enough for one axle, Lordco has them at their warehouse. Check for a private "E" mail.
