hi. i'm looking at buying a 65 3/4 ton 4x4 and am in need of some advice before i go any further. question is how to tell a 1/2 ton from a 3/4. the seller says it's a 3/4 but from looking at pics it looks as though the rear axles are 6 lug. i thought 3/4's used 8 lug rears. how can a novice like me tell the diff from crawling around under the truck. the frame and cab aren't original but both are 65 or 66 so that doesn't bother me much, however getting a 1/2 when i thought i was getting a 3/4 does.

The 3/4 ton will have the 8 lug wheels, as well as a full floating rear hub (hub sticks out past wheel). It will also have heavier spring packs. The side badge should say "20" instead of "10".

Like Bill said, it's all going to be in the lugs... Look for the 8 lugs. Badging really isn't too much to go by since it's easily swapped and the body could have come off a half ton anyway. Here's what a '63 3/4 ton rear looks like, the '65 should look similar. Let us know how you come out on it.

thanks guys for the help. from looking at the pics it's got 6 lugs front and rear. what kinda torques me off is i asked the guy flat out 3/4 or 1/2 and he tells me 3/4.

anyway thanks again for saving me the time and expense of driving to take a look at it.

To the person looking for a 3/4 ton: I have a 1962 2 wheel drive 3/4 ton and it has 8 lugs on the rear. ALSO, the mounting places for the 1/2 ton longbed stepside bed are different than the 3/4 ton-it could be the years. I have a 62 chassis 3/4 ton with a 64 1/2 ton body on it and a SPARE 3/4 ton rear axle off a 1966 Chevy truck.My truck is in Socorro, NM near Albuquerque and is available for sale if someone is interested. I tried the slaes section of this website and no luck, so I just keep working on it. Cannot keep it.

Don't forget, checking the VIN is also fairly easy.

The VIN is easily checkable if the truck is all original, but Scott noted that the cab and frame are not original to each other. In this case it would require him to get the # off the frame.

thanks again for all the help. i thought about checking the vin but since i can count 6 lugs on the axles (atleast it looks like 6 to me see what you guys come up with if you like) i figured i would pass on this one. add in the cost of transport and i'm pbly better off to wait anywayz.

check craigs list minneapolis minnisota (1965 or 1966 should get it) if your curious. i would ask if you correspond with the guy don't tell i'm complaining about his truck or something. i'm just checking my facts.

If it is this truck then it is definitely a 1/2 ton. Hey, there's nothing wrong with your complaining, I would actually call the guy on that. It may be buyer beware, but there's no reason to call it a 3/4 ton when it obviously is not. Also, it may be possible that the cab came off a 3/4 ton. The cab VIN would reflect that and perhaps that is what the guy is going off of.

i'd bet your right in that the guy is pbly looking at his cab title saying 3/4 when the drive train is actually 1/2. i'll pbly flip him a note saying he might want check it out. could save him some headaches when someone shows up to look at it.
