Well Toto ( my '52 GMC hauler) had one heck of a workout today . I had to move my '50 fire truck , a parts truck and my '43 clark forklift to the large bldg I rented so that I can now have a place inside to work on them , of course they were at different locations sometimes many miles apart. Poor Toto is suffering from bad pto output shaft sealitis ( more run than drip ) . After each run I had to top off the transmission . If anyone knows where I can find a Chicago Rawhide CR 8998 seal Toto would be ever so grateful , they have not been made for over a decade or more . I have pix fro those who like to see trucks at work . Click [url= http://s433.photobucket.com/albums/qq56/erhoover/

Toto's not got an oil leak,it's sweat from all that hard work! grin (I hope you manage to find a seal)

That's quite a workshop you've got yourself Ed.
I'm glad to see you're taking care of 'our' firetruck! wink
It looks like Toto's bed held out O.K. that was a fair load!
I really liked the pix

Yeah, Toto really got a workout. You can almost see his tongue hanging out in the last picture.

I have a 1951 brand X, COE wrecker that the PTO shaft seal is leaking some on as well, but quite not as bad as yours. I have not torn into yet but I hope it doesn't have a discontinued seal in it as well. Have you tried taking the OD and ID dimensions to a seal shop to see if they could cross reference it for ya?

Wow, I bet ol' Toto was tired this evening! You know, that seal number caught my attention.... I used to make those suckers! Of course, that was over a decade ago, but it sure brought back memories of that nightmare job...lol... Good luck finding a seal!

That's not a shop - it's an airplane hanger!

Glad to see Toto did it with minimal trouble.

Both Toto and I got a work out . The fire truck was NOT liked by Toto at all . It Just fit and there was a lot of weight behind the axle . I could only get around 30 mph +/- ( no working speedo ) and going down hill she ( OZ's Toto actually was a male ) was rather interesting to control and you started to brake Early .
As to the seal problem . I have looked and cross checked/referenced the number/seal measurements but to no avail . E-Bay has several pages of NOS Chicago Rawhide seals but the one I need has yet to show up . My Spicer PTO seal has a 1 1/4" OD round flange ( which goes into the PTO body ) ahead of the 1 1/2" seal housing ( as a single unit ) . Can't find that type of seal set up anywhere . I may have to locate a good PTO to replace the one I have . One good thing the PTO is not that hard to get on / off . ED H

Hy DaOzTinman, I have looked for the seal number you gave, but I can't even find the number in my 78 C/R book, or in my crossovers, is this the shift shaft seal or the output seal?

DaOzTinman,
I know you have checked ebay, but there is a fellow there that has two trailer loads of old stock parts. I emailed him with your needs. I'll let you know what he says. Here's hoping.

3B - it's the output shaft seal .
Super55 - Thanks - I sure hope I can locate one I've other jobs for Toto but hate to spend the $$$$ for trany oil for every time I take her out for a run.
54Tow - The bldg. was used as a farm equipment maintenance business at one time . He would have up to 4 combines at a time in it .
Thank goodness when people see Toto going down the road with a load on her they are a little more interested in looking than cussing you out for being in the way . ED H

Hy DaOzTinman, I found two possibilities C/R 12530 = Napa NOS12530 $11.49 the dimensions of this seal are 1.250" X 2.063" X .438", the second possibility is C/R 21163 = Napa NOS21163 $12.49 the dimensions of this seal are 2.125" X 3" X .375", you should be able to tell which one by the O.D., if neither of these are right please give me the O.D. of the seal, or the part number from the PTO, hope this helps.

Tinman,
Toto sure does earn his keep. That looks like a great new doghouse for him and the rest of your litter. Didn't know you had a cool old forklift too. I recently acquired one myself, I'm thinking that a forklift or a good old tractor are necessities for big bolt ownership.
Hopefully those part numbers worked out and you fixed toto's runny PTO output. It is spring, could be he's just got allergies I've been a little runny myself of late.

I agree with you Mongo a forklift is a real asset moving pieces parts about . I got it to move my antique printing equipment about . It's a 1943 Clark Carloader . They were designed with a short mast to load/unload RR Box cars .With the short mast it will go into storage units/garages without hitting the top of the door opening . It's brakes are shot and the clutch needs work but if your careful it's a good worker . The biggest problem is my long legs . I have to sit on the rear of the engine hood to be able to drive the bloody thing - one's seat gets hot after awhile . I was able to get full manuals from Clark so at some point I will restore it . 3B - Here is a drawing of the Seal w/ measurements . Sorry - had to use a ruler to get them . The smaller diam. flange goes into the pto body to hold on the seal housing . ED H

Hy DaOzTinman, okay now that I have the dimensions it's easy C/R 9889, or National 6847S, you originally posted a C/R number 8998 which doesn't exist. I couldn't find a number for it at Napa, but the National number is available at my local FLAPS, hope that helps.

3B - Thanks for the info that should at least make it a little easyer to find . I was givin the the 8998 number by the sales rep when I asked for it so I could track down a NOS seal . I hope he just made a mistake when he gave it to me and was not being a hoser giving me the wrong number on purpose .Thanks again . ED H

DaOzTinman, I don't know what's up with that dude from ebay with the old parts he has not answered my emails, although he is very good at sending out the parts I bought.

Anyhow like 3B said, that 8998 number isn't a Chicago Rawhide according to the NAPA place I went to, but it is a National number. Think that's where the mix up is? ohwell

Thanks Super55 and 3B ; Haven't found anything yet but I have been too busy to really look to hard and never think about stopping at the parts store when I'm near by one . When things slow down a bit I'll have to get on it -there may be a '50's tow truck in Toto's work day future . ED H
