I have created a few posts regarding questions recently as I undergo this swap. Another question has arisen. Can I use the 'harmonic balancer' off of the 216 so I can have the wider belt (and also the original hand crank assembly)? Will it affect the 235? Is the 216 bottom pulley even a balancer? I see no rubber ring in the center as I do on the 235... Are both of these pulleys pressed on and need a hb remover to uninstall? See pics for reference of all my questions. Thanks!

Just an additional pic to see the 216 out of the way. My buddy said it looked like a 'gutted bass'. smile

I did the same as you. I put a late 235 in place of the 216 in my '46. The balancer on my 235 was damaged, so i used the one off the 216. No problem. You will need a puller to remove pulleys. Use a large hammer and block of wood to put it on. Watch for clearance on the fan after you get everything on. That was my biggest problem. Cecil...........

When you bought a new balancer from Chevrolet it came with bolts tightened down in the holes used for pulling the balancer. These lock out the deading affect of the balancer while driving it on. Once in place the bolts need to be removed.

Here is a Link to the Chevrolet Shop Manual's instructions for installing the harmonic damper. Use of the
"official" tool also locks out the damping effect and avoids the need to pound on the part itself. Some people like to heat the damper up to around 150 F to slightly expand the hub diameter before driving it on.

Another technique to install the balancer is to drill and tap the crankshaft snout for a 7/16-18 cap screw to draw the part on without pounding. I have not tried this with the hand crank type of balancer, however.

Big Tee,
I am contemplating the same balancer switch from a '41 216 to get the wider pulley on my '54 235 as I have several usable wide pulley generators and pumps. Were you successful with this? Any particular issues? I can't believe how quickly problems can be addressed at Stovebolt as I logged in to ask this question and found these posts already here.
