Have a 1965 Chevy Stepside and all gauges work except the fuel. I replaced the sending unit in tank thinking that this would fix the problem. Guess again same dead guage. What are the odds the guage is the culprit? Is there a way to test the guage before I look for a replacement?

WEKNFUN,

I copied this procedure from an earlier post. The Electrical forum is full of stuff like this, and would be the best place to have it answered.

"It's pretty easy to break the problem into two pieces. If the gauge is properly powered on one side, and the other side goes to the sending unit, then turn the key ON, pull the sending unit wire (at the sending unit) and the gauge should read FULL. Same deal but ground that wire. Gauge should read EMPTY. If all this works, the gauge and wires are fine and the problem is the sending unit or its connection with ground".

This is pretty simple to do, give it a try! I think there is a common connection point on your truck in the fuse block. There is a wire from the sender that needs to be attached to a tab to complete the path to the gauge, make sure the wire is where it's suppose to be. I think this applies to your year truck.

make sure your replacement sending unit matches the correct ohms for the gauge..........I am sure you have........I bought one once that had been placed in the wrong box....took awhile to figure it out..

I did have a chance to go out in the garage this weekend and try your suggestion. The guage stays pegged to empty with key on or off, sending wire on or off and grounding wire on or off, it makes no difference. I noticed that the sending unit is grounded to one of the screws that holds the sending unit in the tank, not a connection to the tab. I believe i have seen in other postings its "OK" that way. Could the sending unit wire to guage be shorted? Should wire go directly to guage or fuse pannel? Seems like next step is pull dash and guage. Thanks for your suggestion!
