Took the lower cover off and a chewed up 1" long, 1/4 in diameter hunk of metal rod fell out. I believe that this was a weight tack welded to the clutch cover/pressure plate and assume it was for balancing such. Can I run without this? Or should I bite the bullet and take out my fairly new clutch assembly and either have it balanced or replace it? Thanks in advance,

Is there some reason you couldn't weight the piece that fell off and tack a new duplicate on in that same place. I would guess the old location would be marked with a couple of weld pimples.
Stuart | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 | I've watched the rebuilding process on several clutches, and the balancing procedure is the last thing that gets done after all the reconditioning and assembly is accomplished. At worst, the loss of that balance weight might create an annoying harmonic at a certain RPM, but it won't keep the clutch from functioning. Run it awhile, and see if it shakes too much to suit you. An inline six is naturally balanced, because of the even spacing between power strokes and the design of the crankshaft. It would take a pretty good bit of imbalance on the pressure plate to make things shake very much.
