I was under my recently acquired '49 5 window today to check and fill my differntial and found a bolt on top of the driver's side axle. It opens to reveal what appears to be a fill hole of some sort. Does anyone know what this is for?
Thanks, Rich

Contact Tom Myers at 918.542.3871. He is located in Miami, Oklahoma. When I prepared my rear axle for powder coating, I found that my vent was crushed. I had one from Tom in just a few days. He's a good source. Good Luck

Then bend some thin sheet over and into the groove, which is a retainer. On the later trucks GM went to a piece of hose, so a pipe nipple with hose barbs, with the hose going up to the frame and bending over, so water doesn't run into it. Lets you drive through water without getting water in the differential.

Took a plastic tubing brass insert collet (the one you install in the end of plastic tubing to keep it from collapsing) and pinched closed the top end. Then the open end of the collet went over the barbed end which allowed it to move up and down over the barb but not come off. Venting could then take place without anything getting into the axle.
