My truck has the three speed column shift
On my past two outtings I have noticed a "clanking" noice while accelorating in 2nd gear. But worse, twice while smoothly driving in 3rd my gear shift lever popped up into neutral all by itself leaving me coasting.

Had to slow to almost a stop to get it back into gear.

Will be bringing it into my local mechanic next week ...but would like some input as to cause, and whether this means an adjustment or a new tranny.

Thanks.

Popping out of gear is common on sloppy worn trannys.. my '50 1/2 ton would do that occasionally, but only in second.

My '50 1/2 ton would clang.. but only in second gear. It turned out to be the u-joint inside the "torque tube" deal right behind the transmission.

It didn't clang in faster gears because the RPM's of the joint were fast enough at higher gears that centrifigual force kept it from clanging.

Kind of like an out of balance tire.. the "shimmy" will be more noticable at a certian speed.. the higher or lower you get from that "ultra wobble" speed the less noticable the problem.

Sounds like you could benefit from a tranny rebuild and a new joint from the torque tube to the transmission.

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

Take a look at the shift box on the column. There are rubber bushings on the arms on the box that hold the rods. New bushings might reduce the play and help it stay in gear. Also you might be able to adjust the rod at the tranny end. Worn out motor mounts can also cause it to jump out.
