Is there a timing relationship for the fork and the electrical contact. Mine wants to spin before it engages the flywheel. Does anybody understand me?

There is no adjustment of any component that I know of. The bendix should be well into the ring gear before the starter switch is closed and the whole enchilada spins.

A worn starter drive or worn out teeth on the ring gear could exacerbate your condition. There are lots of little pieces of linkage to wear, but they usually give you the reverse problem.

I would pull the starter and check out the drive gear along with the condition of the starter switch. While it's out, give the stomp linkage a jiggle and verify its health.

As I mentioned above, I think the drive should be well seated into the ring gear before the switch even thinks about 'making'.

I'll be you find the problem quite easily.

You might be able to adjust the linkage to solve your problem. Some of the switches that bolt to the top of the starter have elongated mounting holes. If you can slide your switch forward that will allow the linkage to move further before engaging the power. You might have to play with it a little.

I had a problem last fall where the starter would not engage fully, then would stick when i finally go it to engage. This resulted in killing the starter. Brand new starter at NAPA for $100 w/ lifetime warranty. The reason i was having this problem was because the front cab mounts rotted and the cab tilted forward, causing the starter linkage to work wrong. The quick fix was cut the linkage and shorten it to work. This weekend i plan to pull my front clip to fix my cracked block, i figure theres no better time to fix the cab mounts than when the clip is off. Luckily i have a spare linkage.

I will get you that tommorrow. The box is at my shop.

Heres the # 44-9651. It took them 3 times before they found me the right one. The first 2 times they sent ones with out the lever.

That part number does not see to show up. There is a 44-9651 (449651) for 3/4 ton 1950 216 engine. It is now $134 but that is not so bad if it has a life-time warranty.

perhaps, they switched the boxes in all of the confusion. I remember having them side by side on the counter. DO NOT get the part # i gave you, its the wrong starter. I remember that the correct starter was not in their computer, and the salesman had to call their tech line to straighten it out. Dont worry, they CAN find it for you. Believe it or not, the core fee is sixty-five cents.

The good thing about NAPA is that the salesperson has the ability to change prices. When you go there, ask him/her if thats the best they can do.
