the later 230, 250, 292 are pressed on too. you prob can't reuse the gear some do though. on the later engine's i mentioned i thought they figured out you don't need the dripper and splash oiling was good 'nuf.

shmkr,

Your profile doesn't list what type rig you have, so I'll make an assumption it might be a Stovebolt six of some sort.

Yes, you would have to remove the camshaft to press the gear off. The factory oiling for those timing gears is a small spigot that protrudes from the front of the block. It should be obvious..you should see it sticking out. It has a weird looking end that appears someone might have pinched it with vise-grips.

This spigot, or tube drips/sprays oil onto the timing gears. It's tapped into the oil galley, and is know to plug up occasionally.

I think you can pull it out with vise-grips or channel locks if you slowly turn and pull it. It needs to be reinstalled in a specific manner, pointing in a specific direction.

How have you determined oil isn't getting to the gears? There is a common connection with the crankcase at the bottom of the timing gear enclosure and I have heard that the general splashing and oily environment usually keeps these adequately lubricated even if the little sprayer is partially plugged.

The sprayer has a small hole in the end. See if it's plugged before you start ripping out the cam etc...it might be a simple fix.

I seem to remember a machined slot on the back surface of the front plate that bolts to the block. I am trying to think whether the slot carries the oil to the spout or not. In any case you would remove the cam, not the gear from the cam.
