Can you identify this tranny?

It was laying with the motor in the back of a '51 1/2 ton, and since the engine looked like a 216 I guess I just assumed thats what it was for, but the "tail shaft" isn't what my '50 3100 3 speed tail shaft looks like.

It's got the two deals sticking out the side for connecting to the column shifter, but looks like it might have the tail shaft for an "open" u-joint.

Perhaps somebody put a "open u-joint tail" on a three speed column shift tranny?

looks just like the three speed "muncie" that was stock equipment in my '61 Apache. 1st gear non synchroed. Tail shaft looks slightly longer however, perhaps from a passenger car originally?

That,s what i would say. A 3 speed out of a car 55-66.

I believe you have a 55-57 passenger car trans. I think it may be be same length as pickups for a few years more but I don't recall the exact year. 58 up cars have a shorter tailshaft.

I've had many of those ,some from late 50's trucks,56 cars and the ones with tranny mounts,supposedly 58 and up cars.All where the same length,21 inches from the front flange to the rear of the tail housing.

do you have any numbers of the housing one of us my be able to find it in hollander book

Ok.. there are three sets of numbers..

On the gearshift thing: 3731911 GM

On the tranny itself: GM 12 3830210

The numbers on the "tailshaft" i'll have to do some scrubbing with a wire brush to make out.

I manually ran the tranny thru the gears and it seems to be alright.. but it's longer than my current trans, and looks like it's designed for an "open ujoint" configuration.

This weekend i'll have a look at the '51 1/2 ton I got it out of and see what its driveshaft and rear look like.

I figured since the truck didnt have an engine and trans installed, that the engine and trans in the bed were the ones for it.. either that isnt the case, or somebody had rigged that trans to work.

could not find those numbers in my hollander maybe someone else will have better luck, sorry that i could not help you out..mike j

I think you will find it to be a saginaw. It looks just like the one I have asked about that I have in my 56 chevy. Someone told me where to crosscheck my #'s but I forgot where.

fumblin that is definately an open, hotchkiss drive tranny Not a torque tube type had exact one in my 55 pass car and the same trans was in me and my dads 62 GMC carry all
