I've tried various searches (here, Google, HAMB, Inliners) and can't find the deck height (crank center to gasket surface) for either series.
I've read that "the 270/302 is 3/16" taller than the 228/248", but is that just 1/2 the stroke difference, or it it accurate?
I've also see references to "the 10.875" deck height is already in the factory tooling, so it's been preserved from the 235, to the 228, to the 292". If both are true, that means the 270/302 is 11-1/16" (10-7/8" + 3/16")?

Thanks.

It's possible to calculate deck height if you can find a couple of other specifications. You'll need to add 1/2 the stroke length, the connecting rod center-to-center distance, plus the piston compression distance. You'll be within a few thousandths of the actual crank center to top of the block distance, assuming no tolerance for deck clearance at the top of the piston. I don't have my connecting rod manual or piston catalog handy, but I'll be glad to look those specifications up in a couple of days if you need them.

Sorry about the delay- - - - -that's one of the few engines the manual fails to list either rod length or piston specifications. If you can find an automotive machine shop with access to the AERA (Automotive Engine Rebuilders' Association) engine block specification book, the deck height should be in that one. I have a copy of their connecting rod manual, but not the block book.

Panic,
I spoke to Dave Haugen at AERA today and he doesn't have the deck height specs. He will search his contacts and see if he can possibly come up with them. You understand the 270 is an inline and not a V-6.I have attached a link with some valuable information on your project .Feel free to contact me with any other engine related questions.

The unpublished deck height reported is 11.593 - 11.600 for all V-6 GMC's .I hope this helps

Thanks, but I don't see any commonality in design between the L6 and V6. I know there is a tendency to re-use any tooling and dimensions when re-designing, but there don't appear to be any here.

You aren't going too when you have V -vs-L6 other than possibly the bore dimension, ring set, rear seal, front seal, lifters and possibly the bearings .You are dealing with 2 different engines.Maybe I don't understand what you are asking ?

Sorry, I thought my first post was clear: I need data for the 228, 248, 270, 302. Yes, I know they're L6 engines. Yes, I know the V6 is different.
