I think the Suburban/Canopy/Panel gas tank sender unit is not a an easy item to find. Have you found a vendor who lists that part?

I will be interested to see if anyone here comes up with a vendor that supplies this item for TF or AD. That would be great info.

You might be able to rebuild the one you have. The potentiometer might by swaped from a 49-54 tank in cab unit. Then you'll have to reconfigire the pick up tube and the float length. I've done that with my AD panel. To my knowledge and research, nobody sells the AD 'burb and panel sender unit for the gas tank as aftermarket. Good luck trying to find a good used one. NOS is next to impossible to find.( I've been looking for 20+ yrs.) | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 | Does anyone have a picture of one? Thanks | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | The 54/55 style of panel-body gas gauge sender (and gas pick-up tube) is different from the 48-53 set up. So, be sure you "re-configure" a newer unit that does what you need. In 54-55 the panel-body sender/pick-up comes out the top of the tank. In 1954 and later, the cab-body sender/pick-up-tube is also a combined unit, I think.
It would be nice to hear from someone who has actually done this "re-configuration" on a 48-53 panel-body truck. Also, if a 55 and newer 12v unit is used, will it work properly on a 48-53 6v truck (I am just asking to be careful)?
| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 | You're right tclederman - The '54-'55 sender unit and pick up tube are a combined unit assembly coming out of the top of the tank. The '48-'53 has the pick up tube coming directly out of the front side of the tank just below the seam. If you are using a'48-'53 tank with the '54-'55 sender unit ,you will need to block off the original pick up tube hole, with either a plug or go to a radiator shop and have the tube cut out of the tank and a patch blazed on to cover the hole. This "reconfiguration", that I mentioned in my previous post, I did putting a '54 1 ton panel truck tank into a '48 1 ton pick up. Now as to the 12v /6v, the sender unit doesn't know the difference between 12v and 6v. BUT - the gas gauge will need an inline voltage reducer or you will burn out the 6v gas gauge if you convert to a 12v system. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 | Joe H gave me a good lead yogis sells a aftermaket one, i just need to check the mounting pattern and they are about $30.00, i would like to adapt a 55-62 12 volt gas guage into my guage cluster so i will not have to use a reducer. i know chevy gauges will interchange, i just need to find one. i will look at the trucks and cars at the next show | | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 12 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 12 | Modern Quick Ship GM Parts shows one in stock. It's part number 1515466. They're phone number is (800) 722-4828. They seem to have a mix of NOS and aftermarket stuff, so ask plenty of questions when you call. I have one of these NOS units for my burb, so if you need any dimensions if you're going to fabricate/modify one to make work, I'll be more han happy to to supply them. If they don't have what you need, check Ebay. I saw an NOS one last month, and they pop up there from time to time. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | Is the burb tank different than the 47 truck because I believe that the 47 tank was undernearth. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | The 47-48 tank was not in the cab (in was "underbody") and the Master Parts book shows that the same under-body tank sender was used from 1947-1953 (actually, the same from 1937-1953). This information makes the 54/55 panel body tank sender look like a real rarity.

That's what I was talking about in my post about the rarity of the '54-'55 'burb or panel sending unit/pick up tube assembly. And speaking of gas tanks - the '47-'53 1/2 ton 'burb or panel are the same as the '47-'48 1/2 ton pick up. The 1 ton gas tank from the panel or pick up '47-'53 has different dimensions because the 1 ton frame is narrower. The 1/2 ton tank will not fit the 1 ton. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | If you find one that's close but wrong screw pattern, just make an adapter/spacer and use two gaskets.

That's why I was asking for a picture. I am going to check it out this week, I will be where my trucks are.. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Sooooo.. we help you and you find one and not tell us where? You'll have to lengthen the pick up tube on the car sender to work on the 'burb tank, that's if the orientation of the float arm is in the same direction on both. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 | i was thinking the station wagon tank, not the car. Their tank is similar in size, but the orientation of the sender may be wrong. A picture would help. Maybe John will share the information that he found. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 | once the part gets home i will find out if i can make it work. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 348 | Sooooo.. we help you and you find one and not tell us where?
