i am parting out a 58 gmc 1/2 ton pick. i was wondering if the rear end would be a good one to put under a 49 chevy pk/up to change to open rear. i will still be using it as a pick/up, so the low ratio won,t be a problem. are there rears different than the chevy,s.of the same years?

I believe the 1/2 ton GMC rear is a spicer/dana 44. If it will mount it should work, and there are many ratios available for ring/pinion, unlike the Chevy rearends. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Its likely a Dana and would be a good choice.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...

Could be a Spicer 45 @ 3.92 behind a standard or 3.07 if it's behind an automatic. GM corporate would be 3.90. The corporate has a third member that pulls out. Spicer has a 1 piece carrier and axle housing. Your axle seats will have to be modified if you go to an open drive shaft because the torque tube keeps the axle from torquing. This is a quite simple task and the Old GMC site has some good instructions on how to do it.

Corrections to the above posts. The GMC is likely to have a Spicer 45, not a dana 44. I can't tell you what the diference is, but they are different. Very few dana 44 parts will interchange with the spicer 45. If the jimmy has a spicer, it is possible it also has posi, as that was an option. The only con to this rear end is the brake drums can be difficult to find if they are bad. It should match up pretty well in an AD chevy
