I have just started to mock up the 4.3 v/6 engine. I'm planning to install in my 51. Mustang ll IFS is in place. Also planning to use the original rad if possible. After leveling everything in the mockup, It almost looks like the fan is about 2" to low? Planning to fabricate a shroud, trans. & motor mounts. Need advice on the fan height??Sugestions???

as HIGH as possible. the return hot water comes/pumped to the top so it will gravity fall and cool. But a 16'' fan fills a lot of space on these radiators. there is plenty of room w/ these slim fans now-a-days. I welded 4ea 1/4'' elevator bolts http://www.nutty.com/pdfcharts/elevator_bolt.pdf to the radiator support before i painted it w/ POR-15, used 2 flat 3/4'' straps and 1 long 1/2'' angle to support the entire bottom. nyloc'd all.
on a pusher fan no shroud is to be used, the puller fan gets a shroud.
mount the pusher about a 1/2'' away from the radiator.

now that i've said this you don't say if this is an electric fan you're using.
if it is i used 2 relays to run it.

While we are on the subject, if using a pusher fan, can anyone recommed how many cfm is enough? Or is it a matter of getting the most you can? In other words, is there a minimum cfm fan one should have to be safe?

Not trying to hi-jack the thread, just thought this would be a good spot for some input on this air movement question.

By the way, Jim - I have had my pusher set up exactly the way you describe, and it has been successful.
Thank you!
Joe smile

when I contacted a SPAL distributor/vendor 'the fanman' http://www.the-fan-man.com/shop/siz...?osCsid=3bc69328aed189562027af6f037ce1a3
they said the 2300cfm fan was noisy and he recommanded the 2000cfm that i have in 16'' installed in my rig. whatever blade design,,,,,,, I went for the optimal cfm and their recomendation. the fan has power ALL the time and is ground start off the relays via a switch. it works on 2 relays and a 190 degree napa temp switch that completes the ground circuit to operate the relays at 190 degree water temp.

Vickraft,
Only think i can think of that other have not said is to get a curved blade fan vs strainth. THe curved blades are quieter vs straight.

Wow you guys have got me thinking. Thanks, Alan Horvath,Carolina trucks & everyone else for the wealth of information and sites. Originally as a first time builder I had thought if I just re-installed the original mechanical fan that was on the 4.3 and the very thick 51 rad with shroud that it would handle the cooling. Because the fan on the 4.3 is much lower than the original 216 (about 2") and not up high enough I may have to consider a pusher fan.No shroud! (16",quieter 2000cfm with double relay wiring (to share the load)as was very well explained.)good photo's etc.
I presume the reason for a pusher fan is that it would not rob power from the engine like the mechanical fan would? Can be installed exactly where it is needed? Increase fuel efficiency? Also perhaps this would allow a little more room because of the removal of the mechanical fan?

Thanks to everyone for your time & consideration.
Mery xmas & happy New Year to all.

I had to because of my 292 installed motor w/ a 3groove pulley.
I have no room. there's always a story and if a member has a photo album it helps to see what they did and why, (if noted on the photos).

As much as I like the guys at Fatman Fabrications, noise of the fan shouldn't be a consideration - that's why Dynamat was invented. I got a Flexalite 180 because it gets pretty hot here in summer and I liked how the built in shroud fit the radiator.

If you plan on having a/c remember that your condenser needs to be in front of the radiator so you'll probably need a puller.

Yes, you are right Carolines truck, I should consider photo's with notes with my inquiries. Good references help a lot.
Nice pic's & nice truck Desert buick. I had not considered a/c. We only get about 2 weeks a year when its really hot & humid the rest of the time during the summer is comfortable. But a/c would be nice to add on later if I start to travel & visit warmer places. How much space did you end up leaving betwween the shroud/fan & front of the mech. fan pulley?

Planning to take some pic's soon. My cab is now back on the frame. The motor/trans. unit ready to be lowered, once my rad is bolted in front I will start to mock the whole set up. Fabricate motor & trans. mounts.

That is ........ f a N m a n ...... not .... faTman
yes i have dynamat around my cab, see my photos. I listened to what the vendor/dealer said, my truck, areas where i travel and took his recomendations. he could have made a bigger profit if i had bought the 2300+ cfm fan wink
