How much "play" should the brake pedal have in relation to the bushing that connects it to the master cylinder unit. I don't know if its ever been changed, and it seems to have too much room to wiggle. If I should replace the bushing, where can I get one. Thanks.

It should have no play in it in a perfect world. I would check with Jim Carters for the part or Chevy of the 40's.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

watsjoe,

I don't know if your rig resembles the truck in the thread I linked, but it's always great to have more info than not enough...right!

Stuart is correct! thumbs_up

No play would be ideal. You will have to mess around with the linkage to the master clylinder. I have dismantled my master cylinder and am in the process of cleaning and rebuilding it. It was in sad shape. I bought a rebuild kit from JC. To help take the "side to side play" out of the brake pedal I ordered, and just received, bronze bushings from Jim Carter. Had to be back ordered but looks like their going to fit with no problem. I ordered the pair so I can also replace the clutch pedal bushing. Still have to remove that stubborn steel pivot pin on the clutch side. I've been out of town and hope to resume my efforts after Christmas.

As far as the clutch pedal is concerned, my shop manual calls for a 3/4 inch play before engagement. Just an FYI. My clutch pedal had a slop of about 2 inches!! Way too much! eek Can't wait to redo my clutch and install that brand new throw out bearing!!

Thanks for the info. I'll be ordering them from Jim Carter.
