Can anyone decode this "Thing" I have in my 55 1st series?

Coupled to a 283 chevy, 5 speed manual. Number on bellhousing is

GM8672240
Hydramatic

Number on Tranny is GM8672234

Thanks in advance.. been all over the net trying to figure out what his is.

Someone on craigslist says he is selling a New Venture Gear 5 speed tranny with part number 8672234 on it.
