Well, I thought I'd clean up the bellhousing inspection cover before reinstalling it. Had lots of 'protective coating' inside and out. While cleaning the inside, I found this part that has aparently broken off somewhere.

1) Does it look familiar to anyone? :confused:
2) If so, could you show me a pic of a new one?
3) Most importantly, is it a serious problem?

part of the throwout bearing or arm?? part of the bendix from the last starter that crapped out?? seems if was a serious problem, you'd already know at least now ya know what that rattley sound was!

I'm assuming the part is proportional in size to the pencil? Thast's part of the snap ring retainer that holds the starter drive in place on the armature shaft. Not terribly important, other than the fact that the end play on the starter won't be correct. As long as you don't remove the starter and dismantle it, you won't miss the piece much, and nothing can fall off because the drive assembly is retained by the starter nose cone. Fix it whenever you've got the starter off next time, and if you're installing a rebuilt starter, the new one will have a complete retainer ring as part of the new assembly.

Yes, its proportional in size to the pencil. Thanks a bunch. That at least makes me feel better about driving it. In addition, I'll just imagine that it 'might' have come from an 'old' starter that 'might' have been replaced by the PO.

there is a wire ring on the starter shaft to stop the drive gear at its rear travel limit what you have is the ring that snaps over it to keep it in its groove.it is not uncommon for these to break.
